Project Brief & Skillset Role:
The port of Damietta located 10Km West of the Nile, and 70km west of Port Said.
The port`s basin is connected of the Nile by a canal to facilitate access to inland navigation .
Although mainly acting as a transshipment port, the port of Damietta offers excellent access to Egyptian transport infrastructure allowing easy access to local markets and exporters. DCHC was established in 1986 is located on the western of the port of Damietta. In 1990, DCHC began commercial operations, becoming one of the most important container terminals in the Mediterranean Sea.
The advanced equipment within the company serves as crucial arms in fulfilling its functional duties towards the port in general and the clients in particular, playing a vital role in the supply chain to and from the Arab Republic of Egypt.
The giant container trading vessels act as fingers to the company’s arms, enabling it to meet its commitments. Therefore, the incident involving a cargo boat colliding with one of the main cranes, causing it to be taken out of operation according to safety standards, had a significant negative impact on the efficiency of the company and consequently the port.
Recognizing the urgent need for guaranteed and certified solutions to overcome the repercussions of the incident, which resulted from a collision between a boat and one of the crane pillars, namely C OO8, rendering it inoperable.
SKILLSET Role:
Skillset was contracted to conduct inspection work, field measurements, and propose suitable solutions in accordance with industry standards and international codes.
The company’s recommendations were endorsed by the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alexandria, recognized as an accredited institution in this field, outlining the scope of work as follows:
- Conducted a site visit to assess the overall situation.
- Performed necessary Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and measurements using Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT), and Penetrant Testing (PT).
- Conducted geometric measurements for the entire area, including the defective region.
- Proposed an engineering solution and repair procedure, supported by precautionary measures.
- Issued a comprehensive final repair report.
- The report received approval from the Research Center of the Faculty of Engineering at Alexandria University.
